Daily Devotion: Complete in Christ Week Seven, Day Three

Devotion

Psalm 1 gives us a beautiful picture of a person who is firmly established in God's truth.

The psalmist compares that person to “a tree planted beside flowing streams.” A healthy tree doesn't survive because it has strong branches. Its strength begins underground.

Its roots reach down into the soil. They find water. They anchor the tree. They provide nourishment. When the wind blows, the tree may bend, but it doesn't easily fall because its roots run deep. The same is true of our spiritual lives.

We cannot expect to stand firm when the winds of deception begin to blow if our roots are shallow. Psalm 1 tells us that the person who is firmly planted delights in the Lord's instruction and meditates on it day and night.

God's Word is not something we simply read on Sunday morning. It is the nourishment our souls need every day. If you want to recognize, reject, and refute the lies of this world, you need to know the truth of God's Word. You need deep roots.

• Am I consistently reading and meditating on Scripture?

• What currently has the greatest influence on my thinking?

• What can I do today to strengthen my spiritual roots?

Prayer

Lord, plant me deeply in Your Word. Give me a hunger for Scripture and help me meditate on Your truth every day. When the winds of temptation, doubt, and deception come, help me stand firm because my roots are deeply established in You. Amen.
